Asian Games 2018: Gilas Suffers Defeat from China, 80-82

The much-awaited second game of Gilas Pilipinas in the 2018 Asian Games happened last night, August 21 at Basket Hall in the Gelora Bung Karno complex. Competing against a tough competitor, Cleveland Cavalier Jordan Clarkson debuts with the national team. Unfortunately, Gilas lost by two points.

With Christian Standhardinger scoring 18 points, Stanley Pringle’s 14, and Paul Lee’s 10, the Philippine team put up a good fight against the big men of China. Clarkson garnered 28 points with 5 triples, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. This was his first game with the national team. However, Lee fell short at the final 12 seconds of the last quarter, missing a three-point shot that could have won the game for the team. It was a close fight all throughout. In the end, the Chinese team won, 80-82.

“Jordan Clarkson just showed what kind of player he is. He is heads and shoulders above all the players here and he showed that. It’s just a pity that he cramped in the last two minutes,” said coach Yeng Guiao. Still, coach Guiao reamins positive, “I don’t see this as a loss”.

Gilas will play South Korea next on Monday, August 27.
