No longer exclusive to our female counterparts, or to the androgynous punk subculture, masculinity has since relented its uptight reins and careens out of the safe zone with an appropriation of male-ready makeup. Always pushing boundaries, MAC Cosmetics presents a cool, fun and, of-the-moment collab with Nicola Formichetti’s Nicopanda that will have you swiping it on for fun, at least.
John Mayer has been making a lot of headlines recently, but for a reason completely unrelated to his music—beauty. Upgrading his Snapchat and Instagram Stories “hacks” series, The Your Body Is A Wonderland singer treads an-bro-gyny category by enlightening us with skills such as the D.A.T. (Direct Application Technique), identifying the C.N.Z. (Crucial Necessity Zones) and even dishing out a smokey eye tutorial. Look, men wearing makeup isn’t a foreign concept, especially with more and more of the typically uptight species loosening up and accepting that there are things that aren’t just reserved for the women. Besides, no matter what anyone says, men should have the choice should they feel the need to conceal, highlight and contour, too. Or for the more daring, a pat and swipe of color here and there.
Persistently pushing for diversity and individuality, anchored by its long-held credo of all ages, all races, all genders, MAC Cosmetics has celebrated the blurring of gender lines with cosmetics even before it ever hit a stride on the mainstream. Right up at its alley, MAC collaborates with the irreverent and highly creative Nicola Formichetti and his cult-favorite brand, Nicopanda, crafting a collection that is punk, powerful, punchy and dare we say it, pretty.
In accordance with the throbbing energy and life stemming from his most personal creative project, Nicola Formichetti injects the same amount of fun, fancy, and inclusivity to his partnership with MAC Cosmetics as his line, Nicopanda. “People are talking about it so that’s a great move in the right direction–now we have to have more and more people scream and shout about it,” says Formichetti. “The reality is, it’s hard to include everyone in the world when designing products, but we try to send a message to as many as we can when developing both my designs and this collection. Because of social media, we get to see a lot of different things than ever before. There are so many incredible things happening in the fashion industry, it’s great to be a part of this community and to push the envelope in my own ways. It’s not just about creating a product that people will buy but to send a message of inclusivity.”
From the gritty streets of New York, the edgy and playful approach to fashion and accessories can now be worn on your skin and lips with the hyper-creative selection of kawaii-cute funky colors, panda-imprinted eye and cheek palettes, as well as graphic adornments like Nico’s stickers and tattoo stamps.
Despite the heady mix of colors, slicks of sheen and an overall fun attitude, the Nicopanda x MAC Cosmetics collaboration fully smashes the labels and stereotypes that have long pervaded society. Taking the inspiration of diversity, vision and ideas, the collection puts forth an incredible message of aspiration and acceptance as if saying, you can be who you want to be, in whatever way you choose to express yourself. It may sound like an IDGAF slant, but trust us, in this day and age, it is the good kind of irreverence.
So, go ahead and try it out if you want to. If anything, it is fun–and let’s admit it, we need a little bit more of it in our day-to-day, right?
